Family Traditions

Family Daily traditions

Family Prayer. Traditional Catholic prayers are like family heirlooms passed on from generation to generation. They include many of the best known Catholic prayers such as The Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, and Apostles' Creed.

Evening Walks. Not only can walk help solve problems, but it can also strengthen families.

Bedtime Story. Young parents, aged 16-24, are reading less to their children than older generations, according to a poll of over 1,000 parents carried out by the reading charity Book trust.

Birthday Family Traditions

Serve a Special Breakfast. “I love to start the day with a special breakfast.

Let the Birthday Person Choose Dinner – “At our house, the birthday person always chooses what we have for dinner.

Use a Special Birthday Plate – “We have an ‘I am Special’ plate that I painted/glazed. We put it out for any special day.

Let the Birthday Person Pick the Cake – “The kids always get to pick a special cake.

Make a Birthday Poster – “We made a huge poster with some milestones and tidbits about our son that I’d love to continue doing from year to year. For his first birthday we included his height, weight, number of teeth, and some of his favorite activities.

Surprise Them with Friends & Family – It was so precious to see the other kids so excited to yell surprise and to see the reaction of birth kids.

Christmas Family Traditions

The Christmas holiday is really just a part of the gospel story—God came as the man, Jesus, in the flesh to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus' birth signifies God's grace and love for His people.

Use decorations to tell about the entire life of Christ. Christmas is a time that usually emphasizes the birth of Jesus, but decorations can also celebrate the remainder of His life on earth.

Fast a meal.  Christmas includes a large focus on food.  This year during the week before Christmas, give up a meal and pray during that time for the poor, hungry, and spiritually lost in the world.

Watch a movie that remembers the life of Christ. There are several good films that focus on the birth, death, and life of Christ. We recommend Jesus of Nazareth, the film, Jesus, or for mature audiences, The Passion of the Christ.

Halloween traditions

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. What's not to love about candy, costumes, parties, and spooky chills? We have a few family traditions we do every Halloween to help celebrate the season and create some fun anticipation.

Boo Your Neighbors. This fun Halloween tradition is growing in popularity so be the first to start it in your neighborhood as a way to connect.

Family Halloween Costumes. I always envied families that created a theme for their Halloween costumes each year.

Bake Halloween treats. There is nothing like Halloween to inspire some creativity in the kitchen.

Pumpkin Carving Party - Invite friends and family over to carve pumpkins. Pick a theme, provide the cutting tools and decorating material, and of course, Halloween-themed snacks.
